# Shape Editor: Step by Step Guide

# What is the Shape Editor?

The Shape Editor lets you create new character variations (Shapes) based on an existing Template.\
You can manually adjust or randomly generate unique silhouettes, faces, and body proportions, all while ensuring full technical compatibility with the original character setup.

* Right-click on your Template *(e.g., Male) → select Create → Shape Editor*

<Image align="center" width="400px" src="https://files.readme.io/4bb82546e2680821e01ccf9eb26b90c726386a9e8507ff90c62d2cdd54d31b8a-Screenshot_2025-08-04_at_19.27.15.png" />

## 2.2. Add a Manifold

Meshes used when source and target Templates don't share topology.

**Popul8 Express** provides a **Default Manifold** that can be exported in order to be wrapped around the target template via a third party software, thus creating a Target Manifold.

Here You can find tutorial [How to Create a Manifold for your Base Character](https://developer.didimo.co/docs/manifold)

* Click the Shape Editor node in the project tree to select it
* Go to the **Resources**
* Locate the file named *default\_se\_manifold*\
  *→ Resources → Shape Editor → default\_se\_manifold*
* Drag and drop *default\_se\_manifold* into the Target Manifold field inside the Shape Editor panel.

<Callout icon="⚠️">
  If you are using a different template with a different topology, make sure that a manifold version of your template is properly imported.
</Callout>

# 3. Creating and Editing Shapes

> 📘 Recommendation on Creating an Optimized Set of Shapes
>
> It’s usually recommended to create shapes that modify either the **Face** (e.g., bigger ears and nose) or the **Body** (e.g., muscular upper body with short legs), but not both at once.
>
> This will allow you to better control your variations when creating **Crowd Rules** and configuring **Crowds**.
>
> If you create a shape that modifies both the *Body* (e.g., making it heavier) and the *Face* (e.g., enlarging the eyes), any crowd of characters generated with big eyes will also carry the influence of the heavier body.

## 3.1. Create a Shape

Inside the Shape Editor, you can:

* Click **Randomize** (top-left) to generate a random character variant

<Image align="center" width="600px" src="https://files.readme.io/2f8824b8dbd42069733469c8678a8bdbb9588730da93e92cd1b06fc5b871f9b8-Screenshot_2025-08-04_at_20.05.04.png" />

* For more complex editing expand editable sections using the + icon (e.g., Eyes, Jaw, Legs, Torso)

<Image align="center" width="600px" src="https://files.readme.io/259165d21e096172a76be5651aa459493a40d52474de7fee152e7aa6c450a4e6-Screen_Recording_2025-08-04_at_20.07.06.gif" />

* Manually adjust features using sliders for precise control

**Tip:** If you overdo a change, click Reset (top-left) to revert to default values for the whole Shape.

<Image align="center" width="600px" src="https://files.readme.io/cd43dd5f0beb6c39f6a34083996d2a16d528728f23daaaffc303adb2af6031d0-image.png" />
