What is Blendshape Transfer?

The default bone-based Deformation Rig in Popul8 can be enhanced with a set of preset mesh variations, enabling users to quickly generate diverse character shapes in the Shape Editor. These variations, initially created using Popul8's built-in template topology, are adapted to the user's template topology through a process known as Blendshape Transfer. This allows for effortless customization, making it easy to create characters from new species, with different body types—such as tall, heavy, or aged appearances—or to refine facial features with details like thicker lips, a thinner nose, epicanthic folds, wrinkles, etc.

Use in Popul8

The Blendshape Transfer feature allows the user to seamlessly import a selection of preset character variations into the Shape Editor, where they can be customized and combined with the Deformation Rig to create diverse and expressive characters.

Once imported, these shape variations can be fine-tuned using intuitive controls, enabling the user to adjust body proportions, facial features, and stylistic details with precision. Whether crafting subtle refinements—such as adjusting lip thickness, nose shape, or adding wrinkles—or making broader modifications like introducing new species or increasing height or body mass, the process remains fluid and interactive. By leveraging Blendshape Transfer, users can efficiently explore a wide range of character designs while maintaining a high level of artistic control and anatomical consistency.
